‘UA Team Devon’ Fundraising Initiatives
Fundraising is key to all our humanitarian missions to Ukraine. Nothing happens without funds.
All our Volunteer Drivers pay the costs of delivering vehicles to our Polish/Ukrainian handover team (fuel, ferry, hotels, food, return flight home etc.) …. but who pays in advance for the trucks and the cost of preparing them for the mission?
To keep the wheels rolling we are continually engaged in fundraising activities in advance of missions. All our Volunteers are therefore encouraged to help with fundraising, either as individuals, as a group, or as part of Team Devon.
Most members of Team Devon had never been involved in fundraising before our commitment to help Ukraine started in March 2023 … we had mainly just supported charities with donations. However, with a bit of creative thinking and some focussed energy, we have quickly found fundraising to be relatively easy, fun and very rewarding (on a number of levels).
The following are real examples of some Team Devon member’s fundraising initiatives over the last three years and the level of funds they have raised.
We are always available to advise on new fundraising initiatives and show you how you can link your fundraising activity to our 'Just Giving' page, which enables donations to be boosted by 25% through Gift Aid. [If you don't have our contact numbers, please email us:- help@uateamdevon.uk]
‘INDIVIDUAL’ FUNDRAISING STORIES
Appeal for support from friends and family (£2,000 - £10,000)
Via WhatsApp or Email
This can be a bit of a bold leap in the dark for many, but you will be amazed at how generously your friends and family will support your effort to get a truck and aid to Ukraine.
A carefully crafted appeal message can bring in funds immediately and it is not unusual to raise £thousands within a few days.
However, it is important that this is worded as a personal appeal for support on your drive to deliver a truck to Ukraine, loaded with humanitarian aid, not just a request for a donation to your nominated charity. You friends and family want to back ‘you’, not just a charity you happen to be supporting.
We will gladly provide suggested draft text, but it is important that the message should be edited to reflect your style of speaking and include either a hyperlink to either our Just Giving page or to a Just Giving page you set up yourself, specifically for your UA Team Devon fundraising initiative.

Physical Challenge (£2,000 to £16,000)
Run, Walk, Cycle, Climb etc.
Friends and family will always cheer you on and support you if they see you have put in the commitment to train for an event and will endure some pain completing it. Don’t forget, a picture tells a thousand words and you will need to have a link to our Just Giving page (where donations can be boosted by 25% with Gift Aid) or to a Just Giving page you set up yourself.
The following example is exceptional, but shows what can be achieved with some lateral thinking and commitment.
An inspirational fundraising effort that broke all records (Autumn 2025)
New Team Devon volunteer Nick, decided to cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats. He wanted to do it for charity and one of his good friends is one of the founding members of UA Team Devon. So, having heard about Team Devon’s work supporting Ukraine, Nick set up a Just Giving page and started planning his fundraising ride. Nick completed the cycle in three stages. In between stages he started writing to all his friends and contacts with an appeal for support, by directing them to his Just Giving page. The money started flowing and Nick completed the mission to a fanfare of congratulations … but Nick hadn't finished his fundraising plan. A few weeks later he celebrated his 70th birthday and invited his friends to a party in Dartmouth. He asked guests not to bring him any presents, but to donate money instead to UA Team Devon via his Just Giving page. Moreover, if anybody replied that they were unable to attend, he asked them to make a donation to his Just Giving page anyway. Even then Nick wasn't finished. Midway through the lively party, after Nick had thanked all his guests for attending and supporting him, he handed the microphone to his Team Devon friend, who thanked everybody for their support, congratulated Nick on his amazing achievement and made an appeal to anybody who might like to join Team Devon as a volunteer driver. In total Nick raised a very substantial 5 figure sum which has broken all records.
Now that's the way to do fundraising!

Quiz evenings are really popular and lists of quiz questions on general knowledge or almost any topic can easily be found on the internet. Why not organise a charity Quiz Evening at a local pub or club?

Place Ukrainian Action 'Collecting Tins' in local retailers.
Raffle or Tombola
Hold a Raffle or Tombola at someone else's event.

Private Ukrainian Party Evening (£2,000 to £12,000)
Do you know someone with a barn or large party room? Or use a sports hall or school assembly room. This is a fun way to entertain friends and contacts or involve the whole community. Serve Ukrainian Food, Ukrainian Wine, hold an Auction of Promises, have Ukrainian music and a fundraising appeal.

Logging (up to £12,000 per winter season)
Woodland owners will often donate fallen timber or dieback ash for felling and cutting and splitting, to be sold to locals with open fires or wood burners. Team Devon raise around £12,000 each winter selling logs at £120 per trailer load. It’s also great winter outdoor exercise!

Barrow of Booze Raffle (£2,900)
For the last two years, UA Team Devon have had a stall at Dartmouth Food Festival and raffled a Barrow of Booze – Winner Takes All! Each time this has raised our profile and generated enough funds to buy a truck for the next convoy to Ukraine.

Donate a Vehicle (£2,500 to £4,000)
You will probably be surprised to know that around 30% of the vehicles we deliver to Ukraine are generously donated by individuals or families. Some are prosperous families, but many are not. An old 4x4 truck or family hack car might only be worth a few hundred pounds from 'We Buy Any Car'. Why not donate it to Team Devon and send it to help Ukraine? [or maybe you know someone who might like to donate an old car or pickup truck.]

Agricultural Show or Classic Car Show
We have had stands (or shared a stand) at Totnes, Ashprington and Kingsbridge shows.

Charity Open Gardens (£600)
If you have an interesting garden, why not open it for visitors in aid of UA Team Devon. You can charge for entry and sell tea, cakes, biscuits and preserves. You could also have craft stalls selling all sorts of local artisan products, each making a charitable donation.
Alternatively, why not organise an Open Gardens Day in your village or neighbourhood, by asking lots of keen gardeners to open their gardens in aid of UA Team Devon?

Illustrated Talks (£200 to £4,000)
Are you an accomplished public speaker? Neither was Adam two years ago ... but he is now! Each time he (or Richard) gives a talk about UA Team Devon and their experiences driving trucks for Ukraine, substantial funds flow almost immediately. Audiences are local groups and societies such as Rotary, Soroptimists, Inner Wheel, U3A, Probus, Resident’s Groups, Women’s Institute, Royal British Legion, village communities, golf club, yacht club or special Interest group.

Public (Theatre) Ukrainian Evening (£16,000)
Not one for everyone, but booking the Flavel Theatre in Dartmouth for a Ukraine Fundraising Evening yielded £16,000 last November. On the programme was a retired well known TV host, an Auction of Promises, Ukrainian Wine Talk, Sampling of Ukrainian Wine, Canapes, the Singers from Ukrainian Space in Plymouth and a moving presentation by two founding members of UA Team Devon.
